Teaching Foreign Language With Technology

By Julie | April 13, 2009

One requirement that most schools have, be it a high school or a college, is the requirement that students enroll in some type of foreign language course. For students in high school, a second language is a requirement for graduation. At the college level, foreign language is a requirement for admission. With this in hand, it is not hard to see that any student, traditionally-schooled or homeschooled, will at one point or another encounter the need to take a foreign language course or class.

For the homeschooled student, learning a second language can present some challenges, especially if the parent delivering the curriculum is not fluent or experienced enough in the language that the student has chosen to study. In these situations, parents often choose to look to an expert in the field to help with the development and even the delivery of a foreign language curriculum. More often than not, parents who are homeschooling their child usually make the decision to use some form of technology as an option for educating their child in a particular language.

In developing and delivering a foreign language curriculum, parents typically choose to use a technology-based approached to educating their child. This decision usually means the use of computer programs and software, as well as online distance learning programs.

While software and computer-based programs offer a solid approach to teaching and learning a second language, distance learning represents the more popular and effective approach. Some distance learning schools take great pride in the programs they have developed, and most offer lessons in just about any language, from Latin to Chinese.

Because of the nature of foreign language instruction, a distance learning program typically offers a very interactive and creative method of instruction. Students often report that foreign language classes represents their favorite class. Online foreign language programs delivered online take great care to give participating students an experience that is on par, both academically and experimentally, with traditional second language instruction. Successful online-based language programs make use of a variety of technologies, including video lessons, music-based instruction, games, cultural videos designed to help students develop their understanding of the culture as well as the language, and even virtual interaction with avatars to stimulate learning and development. Whether the student is in the elementary grades or in high school, there are tremendous benefits to be reaped from an online distance learning program in second language instruction.

With the help of today’s technology, parents who have made the decision to homeschool their child now have a variety of options that will allow them to effectively provide their children with instruction in a foreign language. Regardless of the language being taught, options are available which will effectively prepare a student for the foreign language requirements of high school, and for the foreign language requirements that are a part of the college admissions process. Whether a parent chooses to use a software program or an entire online curriculum, the options (and the benefits) are unquestionable.
